One of the most common problems that every child encounters is “tooth-decay”. Commonly referred to as a cavity, it permanently damages the tooth area. Children and toddlers are much fond of eating chocolates, sweets, and sugary foods. Due to frequent intake of sugar, they can develop a permanent cavity in their teeth. Although your child is going to shrug these teeth off, you should not ignore this tooth decay. Parents must monitor the food habit of kids. Follow Child Parenting Tips for child’s development.

Today we will be talking about cavities in toddlers, their causes, treatment options, and how to prevent decay.

Causes of Tooth Decay

We often tell our kids that ” jyada meetha mat Khao, daant kharab ho Jayenge”. We blame those yummy cupcakes and juicy jalebis but the real culprit is the dental plaque that eats at tooth enamel and causes a hole. It is more like a sticky substance that covers the teeth and is formed when the bacteria of the mouth combine with food and saliva.

Cavities build-up due to irregular and improper brushing and therefore it is advised that children should brush their teeth at least twice a day. If your child is less than 6 years of age, you must make them learn how to brush teeth properly.

Another cause of the cavity is improper flossing. When plaque and food aren’t removed from teeth, it may result in building a cavity. Therefore, it is important to teach them flossing regularly.

Poor dental hygiene is not only the cause, eating a lot of sweet, sugary, and starchy foods that are high in carbohydrates also causes cavities.

Prevention of Cavities or Tooth Decay

Teaching good oral hygiene to kids is the best way to prevent cavities. You must closely monitor your child as they brush and floss their teeth. Teach them proper brushing techniques and make sure they brush their teeth at least twice daily for two minutes.

The better way is to floss before brushing. Make sure your kid floss at least once a day. Start scheduling the dental appointments once you see the first tooth of your baby. If you are a parent of younger babies, don’t forget about infant oral care. Your baby might not have teeth but their mouth still has germs.

It is important to wipe their gums and tongue with a soft and clean cloth after feeding. You can use kid-friendly toothpaste to brush your teeth gently.

If your child is fond of eating sweet foods, you must offer a healthier alternative to satisfy their cravings and maintain good oral health. You can offer:

● low glycemic fruits (blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
● trail mix, with nuts
● yogurt
frozen bananas
● cheese sticks
● Dried fruits
● carrots and dip
● granola bars

Conclusion

If you think that cavities are only an adult problem then you are wrong. Cavities can also develop in toddlers and therefore it is important to note the early signs and go to the dentist. Following a less sugary diet and proper oral hygiene can save your child’s tooth from decaying. You must go for regular dental checkups and visit your child’s dentist if you notice the first sign of tooth decay. Also, read Healthy Eating Tips For Kids to avoid such kind of problem.
